Memorial Day Ramblings
It's an opportunity to ruminate on whatever pops into my head, and I'm taking it.
I'm enjoying the day. I plan to go for a five-mile run at Byrd Park this afternoon, then come home and cook out before heading off to the theatre for a run of Act One of Guys and Dolls at six pm. I have a radio interview on B103.7 FM tomorrow at 10:30, and I just 'map quested' directions to the studio.
Things are good. I'm busy, but not too busy, and the small sore throat/pharyngeal irritation I experienced recently seems to have passed. I have been on steroids for the past four days to clear up the swelling in the back of my throat, and tomorrow I finish the cycle. I won't miss the steroids, but I will miss that newfound 'warning track power' I never have quite been able to generate before.
I was puttering around the 'Net and noticed an item that says that my high school classmate and rising Hollywood star, Elizabeth Banks, will be playing the part of Laura Bush in the upcoming Oliver Stone Biopic about our current President. I continue to marvel at Liz's success in the industry, and I know that our High School Theatre Director, Ralph Hammann, must be as proud as I am. It says a lot about my hometown of Pittsfield MA, a place which continues to produce nationally recognized Actors, Ballplayers and Astronauts, and Liz's success motivates me to do the absolute best at whatever I do. I'd be almost willing to bet that there's an Oscar out there with her name on it, and she'll claim it one of these days. I just know it. She just needs to find the right role. She's got that rare combination of talent, beauty and smarts, and she has a flair for comedy that gives her more range than the average cardboard-cutout starlet. Plus, that PHS Drama background taught her to take risks and land on her feet. Girlfriend, we're all pulling for you!!
In my beloved sports world, The Celtics took command in the Eastern Conference finals, netting their first road win of the playoffs the other night with a 94-80 drubbing of the Pistons to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. Seeing the Celtics play the Pistons in the ECFs again is like a time-warp. Throw in the new 'Indiana Jones' movie and it feels like I'm living in the the 1980s all over again!!
The Red Sox dropped Three in a row to the A's recently, but I'm still on an emotional high from Cancer Survivor John Lester's no-hitter against the Royals last week. My Aunt Jan and Uncle Stu were at the Game, and they said it was one for the ages. Lester recently revealed that his father has a treatable form of Lymphoma as well, and he was diagnosed with it about a month ago. I don't know how this guy continues to function at such a high level under such incredibly stressful personal circumstances. Mr. Lester is an inspiration to all who watch him pitch, and living proof that there is life after Cancer.
Finally, Happy Memorial Day to all those who serve or have served this country in uniform, and to the family and friends of those brave folks. Enjoy your day, and this great quote from Damon Runyon:
“You can keep the things of bronze and stone and give me one man to remember me just once a year.”
Best,
Scott Wichmann

Great post, Scotto, thanks for those thoughts. God bless America, and the diversity of thoughts and backgrounds of all those who call themselves Americans. I'm proud to have worn my country's uniform, and to take time this week - and at various times throughout the year - to remember those who gave the "last full measure of devotion".
